There are several different ways to find out your ring size or someone else’s. Some methods are more discreet than others, with the most reliable being getting a jeweller to give you an exact reading. This can be done either in person or by taking someone’s ring (that you are certain they wear on the ring finger) to the jewellers to get its size read.
1. Using a Ring that Fits to Measure its Size:
Take one of your partner’s rings, make sure it is one they wear on the ring finger. It is best if the ring is as plain and flat as possible, as a very thick style or a ring with large stone settings might give the wrong measurement.
Once you have chosen the ring, place it on a piece of paper and draw the inner circle of the ring. Try and keep the tip of the pen as close to the edge as possible, as to not get too small a reading. Do this a couple of times, and measure the diameter (the distance between two points in the circle across the centre). Measure all the drawings to increase accuracy. With the inside diameter we can figure out the equivalent UK or US size. Or you can find it using our table under Sizing.
Alternatively, if you have a printer, you can use a printable guide to find the size using your partner’s ring. Please make sure you use a ruler to ensure that the 5cm line measures in fact 5cm. Otherwise you will have to print the guide again making sure to print at 100% scale. Follow the instructions on the guide and find the size you need.
2. Using a ring sizer:
There are affordable plastic ring sizers you can purchase that can be used to measure anybody’s ring size. We offer a ring sizer in our shop, but you can purchase them from many different vendors. In this case, you will have to put the ring sizer around your partner’s finger to get the measurement, which makes it less useful if you want it to be a surprise. When fitting the sizer, make sure you can remove it without much effort and get it over the knuckle. If you get a reading in between sizes it is safer to go for the larger size.
3. Take your partner’s ring to a jeweller:
This will allow you to get an accurate measurement and is an easy and effective way of doing it if you happen to have a jeweller nearby. Make sure the ring you choose is one that she/he wears on the ring finger. Otherwise, let the jeweller know which finger your partner wears the ring on, and they should be able to give you a good estimate of their ring finger’s size.
4. If you want it to be a secret:
If you are planning on surprising your partner but you also want to get an accurate measurement, put on your partner’s ring on one of your fingers and make a mark with a pen right below the ring, at the bottom edge. With this mark on your finger, you can go to a jeweller and ask them to tell you what size would fit at that mark. When doing this, make sure you don’t push the ring down, it should sit comfortably on the finger (wherever it falls).
Getting the right size can be a difficult thing, especially if you want it to be a secret or if your partner doesn’t usually wear any rings. If you are both involved in the process, the best method to get the size right would be to visit a jewellery shop and get their size measured. Alternatively, if you have decided on which jeweller to purchase your ring from, get in touch to get their ring sizer or recommendation.
If you are surprising your partner with a more inexpensive ring, you may choose to use an alternative method and keep it secret. If you find out later that the size could have been slightly larger/smaller you can keep this in mind for future and more costly ring purchasing decisions.
Alternatively, if you are looking to buy someone a ring that will not be a promise/engagement ring, you can opt for an open ring. These can be adjusted around the size you choose. We recommend you still try and gauge where the size might fall using the following rough guide:
Small: H-L
Medium: M-Q this is the range where most women’s ring sizes fall
Large: R-V
