Maru’s sustainable jewellery

Ethics

At Maru Jewellery we pride ourselves on having a strong ethical framework. We aim at creating sustainable jewelry that both you and we can be proud of for generations to come. Therefore, we are doing our utmost in order to maintain a production process that is environmentally and vegan friendly, while also offering quality pieces made of recycled precious metals and high quality, conflict-free gemstones.

Each one of our pieces is made to order, we do not keep any read-to-ship items. We encourage you to contact us for a custom piece, or to work together to materialise your idea. You can request a gemstone you don’t see on our site, a modifide design, a specific finish, etc.

melting silver for sand casting
In order to make use of all of our Sterling silver scraps, we have created a small selection of sand cast pieces that help us achieve our sustainability goals while also creating beautiful solid Sterling silver pieces. We are open to custom designs, as we make our own moulds and cast our own pieces.

Eco-Friendly jewelry

Our goal is to provide sustainable jewelry that has as little impact on the environment as possible. All production takes place in our Oslo workshop, where all pieces are made by hand using a minimal amount of machines and electricity. The energy we do in fact use, ranging from lights to power tools, come from 100% renewable sources.

Once finished we ship our pieces in Jiffy Green mailing envelopes made entirely of paper, with a recycled paper fibre lining for padding instead of plastic bubble wrap. Inside, you will find a small recyclable cardboard box with your jewelry in a black cotton drawstring bag for silver items, and a durable wooden box for gold pieces. We also include a quality Town Talk polishing cloth that can be used to give your jewellery extra shine. Lastly, we close the box with a matching recyclable linen bow so you can gift it straight away if you wish.

Natural jewelry

Modern jewelry making is generally a very chemical-intensive production. Strong acids and chemicals are used in everything from protecting metal during heating to cleaning and polishing. Some of these chemicals can be extremely damaging to the environment and may cause injuries and pose long-term health risks to anybody coming in contact with them. At Maru Jewellery we have done our best to substitute all harsh chemical products typically used in jewelry making with natural, non-toxic alternatives. This makes the production process safer for our jewellers and cleaner for customers and the environment.

Vegan jewelry

Our sustainable jewelry is 100% vegan and is not made using materials that contain any animal derivatives. Traditionally, a wide variety of animal derived products are used in jewelry making, ranging from leather mallets and aprons, to wool polishing cloths and beeswax. We have substituted these products for vegan alternatives, replacing leather for nylon and leatherette, wool for nylon and cotton and, instead of animal oils or waxes, we use mineral oils and soy wax.

Ethical jewelry

We work with a single stone supplier from Hatton Garden that only stocks conflict-free, high quality gemstones. We are confident in the traceability of their products and know that we share the same values.

Additionally, all gemstones used in our sustainable jewelry are natural and untreated. This adds to the uniqueness of our handmade pieces, as no two stones are ever identical.
