Moonstone

Moonstone is a milky-to-clear bluish stone with a faint yellow and sometimes iridescent shine. Moonstone has been described as “a beam of moonlight on calm water”, called adularescence, which will change depending on the ambient light. Pliny the Elder described the stone as white or transparent with a reflected colour like that of honey, with a figure within it like that of the moon that would vane and shift with the phases of the moon.

Marbode, in the 11th century called moonstone a sacred stone and in the ancient Orient the gemstone’s shining light was believed to be a sign that the stone contained a living spirit, and would therefore bring good fortune.

Moonstone has also been said to protect travellers, particularly by sea, and that it would protect the wearer against swelling, oedema, cure kidney problems and protect against epilepsy. Holding a moonstone in the mouth was also said to strengthen memory and there was also said that it could be used to foretell the future, where having the moonstone in ones mouth and concentrating on a problem, the solution would reveal itself.

Moonstone’s tranquil shine has also been said to calm the nerves, reduce anxiety and make the wearer peaceful and serene.

Moonstone is the birthstone of June and the zodiacal birthstone of Cancer.
