Peridot

Peridot is a bright yellow-to-green gemstone variety of silicate mineral, which is uniquely found in volcanic rock and meteorites and not in the Earth’s crust like other gemstones. As one of the few gemstones that only come in a single colour, Peridots are exclusively olive-green, varying only slightly in their yellow concentration depending on the iron content of the gem and due to its relative low hardness – only 6.5-7 on Mohs scale – peridot is considered a delicate gemstone.

Peridot was known by the Egyptians as the ‘Gem of the Sun’, who used it extensively in jewellery of the time.

Historically, peridot has often been confused with topaz and as such many of the benefits of topaz have also been attributed to peridot. Specifically, however, the yellow-green colour of peridot has made it associated with alleviating liver disease and oedema.

Peridot has been said to contain a gift of inner radiance, helping realise one’s spiritual purpose as well as help free the mind from envious thoughts.

In order to maximise the gemstone’s potential powers, peridot should be set in gold, and this would banish nightmares and any peridot worn on the left arm has been said to protects the wearer against the Evil Eye.

As well as being spiritually charged, Peridot is the birthstone of August.
