Sapphire
Sapphires, like Rubies, are a highly valuable and durable (9.0 on Mohs scale) variety of the mineral corundum. Typically, sapphires are recognised as a blue gemstone, however it also comes in pink, yellow, orange, green, purple and white.
Damigeron in his “De Virtutibus Lapidum” from the 2nd century BC wrote that the sapphire was a royal gem worn by kings as a defence against harm. The gemstone was also believed to protect the wearer against envy and to attract favour from the gods.
To the Egyptians the deep-blue colour of the sapphire was a symbol of purity of character and to the early Hebrews it represented wisdom and chastity. This belief also carried over to early Christian beliefs where the blue was strongly associated with the purity of the sky and as such the stone was especially suited to be used in rings by clerics. From here it was therefore believed sapphire would help in concentration and to interpret hidden meanings.
Bartolomaeus Anglicus wrote in “De lapidibus et metallis” that sapphire could influence spirits and as such was used in necromancy and by witches, two whom it enabled the ability to work wonders.
In India and Arabia it was supposedly also worn to protect against the Evil Eye, plague and disease.
Sapphire is the birthstone for September, the zodiacal birthstone of Libra as well as the gem of the 45th wedding anniversary.
Historically worn for: protection against disease, wisdom and concentration.
