Topaz
Topaz is a semi-hard (8 on Mohs scale) variety of silicate mineral, with colours ranging from white, in the absence of impurities, to brown, yellow, green, pink and blue.
Topaz have been believed to be able to banish evil spells and to protect against the evil eye. During the middle ages, fear of the evil eye was often a constant source of anxiety, thus topaz has also been associated with reducing anxiety and fears.
According to Richard von Garbe in “Die indischen Mineralien” anyone who wears a topaz would be guaranteed a long life, beauty and intelligence.
There also exists stories about a Hindu necromancer who gave a particularly powerful topaz to a wounded soldier by his side telling him to place it on his heart, whereupon the topaz is said to have both quenched the soldier’s thirst and cured his wounds.
To maximise the healing properties of the topaz it should be worn on the left hand and preferably set in gold, which would soothe nervousness, dispel fears and cure melancholia.
Worn as a charm it was believed it could protect against sudden death and disease and even cure hallucinations and prevent asthma.
Topaz has also been believed to bring wealth and in the middle ages it was believed to increase intelligence and ensure health in old age.
Symbolically topaz is associated with loyalty and integrity.
Topaz’ clear light shine makes it particularly desirable as part of a jewellery piece, adding a unique spark and light.
Historically worn for: dispelling anxiety and fears, health and wealth.
