Hand made Sterling silver ring with a gold-set Ethiopian Opal. The band has a bark texture while the bezel is smooth and polished.
To create this piece we employ the ancient method of sand casting, where molten Sterling silver is poured in a sand mold. For this ring we use a real twig and cast a silver version of it. Then we forge the twig into a ring shape and adapt it to the customer’s desired size before adding the bezel. The whole process is unique to each ring, and therefore the result is a one of a kind piece that cannot be exactly replicated.
Opal is an iridescent gemstone created form the mineral silica. The brilliant colour-display of opals makes it probably one of the most spectacular gemstones, where a single gem might shine in all colours of the rainbow, from green and yellow to red and purples and blues, and at the same time change colour depending on the light shining on it.
Due to their magnificent colours opals have often been credited with supernatural origins, where the Bedouins believed opal contained lightning and fell from the sky during thunderstorms. Opal has been cherished as a gemstone from ancient times, being highly sought by kings, queens and emperors and it was believed would bring success and ability to foresee the future, but only as long as the powers of the gemstone was used for virtuous and selfless ends. Furthermore, it would make the wearer level-headed, give clarity and improve memory.
To the Romans opal allegedly symbolised love and hope, and during the middle ages it has also been associated with purity and truth.
Opal is the October birthstone and the zodiacal birthstone of Libra.
Historically worn for: wealth, wisdom, health, success, spirituality.
Every piece we create is entirely hand made to order in our workshop in Oslo, Norway. We do not have any ready to ship products and only begin working on a piece once your order comes through. When you purchase a ring, a pendant, or any other piece from us it will always slightly differ from the one photographed. This is a natural part of the process of hand making and it adds character and uniqueness to your jewelry.
Since the very beginning of Maru Jewelry we have tried maintaining a minimal and organic feel in our designs and continue to draw inspiration from all around us. Our designs are inspired in the beautiful diversity of natural landscapes, the abundance of shapes, textures and colors found in the vast wilderness of Norway. Some of our pieces are particularly rough, emulating the resilience of the flora that manage to survive the harsh Norwegian winters. These pieces tend to be weighty and oxidized, are typically cast in sand in a centuries-old technique, and are made to feel and look like ancient treasures.
We take pride in our production process, featuring only ethically-sourced stones purchased from certified distributors, and using the most natural materials available on the market. We substitute all animal-derived products typically used in jewelry making such as beeswax, leather hammers and aprons, with vegan alternatives, and we try to further minimize our impact on the environment by only using renewable energy to power our tools.
Please contact us for any custom requests or enquiries, as we all always happy to assist our customers and to collaborate.
