Amethyst
Amethyst is an exceptionally bright and vibrant lavender-coloured variety of quartz with a hardness of 7 on Mohs scale. Historically, it was considered a cardinal gemstone comparable with emerald, sapphire, ruby and diamond, but after large deposits were found in Brazil the value of this stunningly beautiful gemstone has fallen significantly, making it a very good choice for amazing, affordable yet beautiful jewellery.
Its name is derived from Greek, α- and μεθύσκω, which basically translates into “not-intoxicate”. As such it was believed that amethyst could protect not only against drunkenness, but it was supposed to have a generally sobering effect in other matters too, giving general level-headedness.
Camilli Leonardi in “Speculum lapidum” noted that it has the power to control evil thought, while at the same time raise intelligence and make the wearer cunning in business.
Amethyst was highly favoured among ancient Egyptians as it was believed it would grant magic powers of protection for the wearer and it is alleged that Cleopatra wore a signet ring with an engraving of Mithra, a deity symbolizing Agreement, Light, Oath and Truth.
Supposedly it would protect the wearer in both war and peace, and it would grant victory over enemies. It was therefore favoured among the Crusaders to repel unknown diseases and protect against battlefield injuries.
To the Rosicrucians the lavender colour of amethyst served as a symbol of love, truth, passion, suffering, and hope and some believed amethyst had a calming effect, reducing nervousness, anxiety and fears.
Amethyst was also considered a good gift between lovers and it was worn by Roman wives with the belief that wearing an amethyst ring or amulet would keep the love of their husbands strong.
Amethyst is the birthstone for February and the zodiacal birthstone for Aries and Pisces.
Historically worn for: level-headedness, to dispel bad thoughts, increase intelligence and for business success.
